Cubs manager Dusty Baker is on the Hot Seat

May has been a horrible month for the Chicago Cubs, who are a major league-worst 6-21 for the month with two home games against Cincinnati remaining. They have endured eight- and six-game losing streaks, kicking off the six-gamer a week ago with three losses to the Florida Marlins, who ended a seven-game slide of their own. The Cubs have been shut out five times in May, held to a single run over 41 innings early in the month to get the skid snowballing. For the season, the Cubs now have scored a National League-worst 192 runs and have posted major league lows in home runs and slugging. They have gone 1-7 in one-run games this month, finding creative new ways to lose in the late innings. They literally used their heads to drop a 13-12 decision to Atlanta Sunday. Despite scoring double-digit runs, a rare feat, the Cubs lost when Braves outfielder Ryan Langerhans lofted an 11th-inning flyball that bounced off the head of third baseman Aramis Ramirez. Langerhans advanced to second and scored the winning run on a single by Marcus Giles. The Cubs set a new franchise record by allowing eight home runs to the Braves in the loss. For nearly all of this stretch, the Cubs have played without their most productive bat, Derrek Lee (fractured wrist), and two key starters, Kerry Wood (shoulder) and Mark Prior (shoulder). Yet, Cub fans have been calling for the head of manager Dusty Baker. GM Jim Hendry said Baker will get a chance to turn things around after the return of his key players. Aren't fan expectations too high for a team light in potent bats and healthy pitching? Or should the Cubs do away with Baker and his us-against-the-world approach with his players, which makes him popular in the clubhouse but has done little else lately but lead to the departure of popular broadcaster Steve Stone during the offseason?

Let's get Lou Piniella in there!

That buzz has circulated Chicago newspapers. He would probably be as good for the Cubs as he was for the Rays.

Will Dusty Baker remain the Cubs Skipper for 2007?
