Look for Pujols to Hit 70 Home Runs
St. Louis star Albert Pujols hit his major league-best 25th home run on Monday. After hitting just one homer in five games, the Cardinals' first baseman is back on his torrid pace with three-run shots in his last two contests. He also leads the majors in RBIs by a large margin with 64, putting the slugger on course for 79 home runs and 203 ribbies. Pujols barely trails the pace set by Barry Bonds in 2001 and Mark McGwire in 1998. Bonds set the new single-season record with 73 home runs five years ago, and he hit No. 25 in the Giants' 47th game of the season. When McGwire became the first person to hit 70 in 1998, he stroked No. 25 in the Cardinals' 49th contest. Pujols has hit 25 in 51 team games. This writer says Pujols will reach 70 and possibly overtake Bonds to set the new single-season standard. He will have to overcome the September power drop-off that has marked his career, but this is a guy who jumped from low-A ball to the majors and is just entering his prime with 226 career homers at age 26. Don't be surprised if he also threatens the single-season RBIs record of 191, set by the Cubs' Hack Wilson in 1930.
