At Least 20 Teams in Playoff Chase

Roughly 90 games into the season and with the non-waiver trade deadline less than two weeks away, 20 of the 30 major league teams are holding down playoff spots or are within six games of a wild-card berth. That includes seven National League teams that are below .500, as well as an Arizona club that begins play on Tuesday at 46-46. That allows for thousands of ways the race could play out, considering Tuesday night's San Francisco-Milwaukee matchup features two sub-.500 clubs that remain in contention. Who know which two teams could be playing the most critical games of the season in the final days of September? When the last weekend of the season is played out, it could be the Yankees hosting Toronto for a chance to play October baseball. Or a key National League West matchup, such as San Diego at Arizona or another storied showdown of Giants vs. Dodgers, this one in San Francisco. Equally compelling is how having 20 teams in the race will affect trades that go down in the final days of July. Would the Brewers be thinking about dealing Geoff Jenkins if they weren't so close to the wild card? Is it possible the 44-49 Braves would be thinking about rebuilding and trading John Smoltz if they weren't five games out of a playoff berth? How much available talent is there to pick from among the 8-10 teams that are out of the chase?
