Rarely Does an 18-1 Surge Have So Little Impact on a Pennant Race

While the Minnesota Twins are 18-1 since June 11 -- which has to involve a few bounces going their way -- they can't catch a break in the competitive American League Central. They have moved to 10 games over .500 with their recent surge, posting a 2.02 team ERA along the way, but the Twins have gained little ground on the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox. The Tigers and Sox, the two teams in front of Minnesota in the AL Central, have also been winning. The Tigers have gone 17-3 over this same stretch, while the White Sox have posted a 15-5 mark. With their current 10-game winning streak, the Twins have nearly caught the Yankees and Blue Jays in winning percentage and are closing in on the fourth-best record in the American League. Minnesota still would be on the outside looking in with Detroit and Chicago firmly in control of the AL Central race and AL wild-card berth. The Yankees and Jays probably will have to overtake their division leader, Boston, to make the playoffs this spring, and the Twins would have to catch the Tigers or White Sox. The Yanks, Jays and Twins have better records than all National League clubs except the Mets, thanks to the AL's 154-98 record in interleague play, but only one of the two AL East clubs has much of a chance to play October baseball unless the rest of the league can dramatically slow the momentum of the Tigers or White Sox.
