What has happened to the Cleveland Indians?
Cleveland won 93 games a year ago and fell just short of the wild-card berth in the American League. Two key players didn't return this spring -- Coco Crisp and Kevin Millwood -- but the young Indians, another year older with the experience of a pennant chase under their belts, seemed poised to challenge the Chicago White Sox for the American League Central title. Jhonny Peralta has been a key disappointment, and the pitching hasn't been nearly as good as it was in 2005. That's especially true of the bullpen, which posted the lowest ERA among all major league pens last summer but ranks near the bottom with a 5.22 mark in 2006. Trying to get back into the AL Central race hasn't been easy with the Tigers, White Sox and Twins all surging. The Indians, who trail first-place Detroit by 18 games, traded veteran first baseman Eduardo Perez to Seattle for a minor league infielder on Friday. It looks as though they are ready to bail on the 2006 season. Is it time to do more dumping, unloading the likes of Aaron Boone, Paul Byrd and Jason Michaels, and maybe Ben Broussard and Ronnie Belliard as well? Looking to the future, Cleveland's pitching doesn't appear to be as promising as it did a year ago, and it may work to the franchise's advantage to bail on some veterans for some young pitchers who might set up the team for a serious run in 2007 or 2008. Many of Cleveland's promising young hurlers of late haven't panned out, and moving a few veterans for a few more young arms might be the formula. After all, Detroit seems to have emerged with a group of young pitching that required patience and enduring some rough spots along the way.
