Can Tigers Beat Yanks Even Once After Last Weekend's Crash?
The Detroit Tigers made a surprise trip to the Bronx after Sunday's season finale, suddenly in line to play the Yankees after failing to claim the American League Central crown with a single win over the Kansas City Royals last weekend. Detroit players received official wild-card T-shirts from Major League Baseball after losing their fifth straight game Sunday, instead of tees for winning a division title. A few Tigers have been seen wearing the official garb, but Detroit closer Todd Jones will have none of it. He called the team's weekend performance "horrible" and wouldn't wear the wild-card shirt. One might wonder how Detroit's failure to win the division it led nearly all season would affect the team. Would it be surprising if the Tigers failed to win another game this year? They fell 8-4 Tuesday night in Game 1 against the Yankees, though they pulled within two runs after trailing 5-0 in the early going. The losing streak is six games and counting, and it will be a sad ending to a special season if it closes with eight straight losses.
