Jeff Weaver Did What?!
The Angels designated right-hander Jeff Weaver for assignment on June 30. He was 3-10 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 starts for the Angels, and if someone then would have said Weaver would pitch a gem in the clinching game of the World Series, I would have asked which mental health facility had that person escaped from. Weaver's season didn't automatically turn around. He didn't find his game until mid-September. His lowest ERA in any month of 2006 was 5.47 in June before he went 3-1 with a 4.15 ERA in September. For the season, he was 8-14 with a 5.76 mark. Somehow Weaver got his act together, and it's hard not to think the genius in the St. Louis dugout is pitching coach Dave Duncan. Whatever Duncan did -- whether it was mostly restoring Weaver's confidence or a more serious tweaking of the veteran's game -- the results were stunning in October's second season. Now if Duncan could only teach his kid how to catch a flyball.
