Zumaya's Game 2 Performance an Indicator of Tigers' Bright Future
The Tigers are the only Game 1 loser in this year's playoffs to bounce back and claim Game 2, and a fair share of the credit falls to rookie reliever Joel Zumaya. The 21-year-old right-hander was perfect for 1.2 innings with three strikeouts in Detroit's 4-3 come-from-behind victory Thursday afternoon. Zumaya was hitting 100 MPH frequently on the radar gun feeding numbers to the ESPN crew, and the likes of Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi looked overmatched against him. The rookie has been terrific all season, posting a 1.94 ERA, .187 opponent batting average and 97 strikeouts in 83.2 innings. What may scare American League opponents most about Zumaya is the Tigers could make room for him in their starting rotation next season. Does that make the most sense? It's hard to argue with the notion that he could have a greater impact in Detroit working 184 innings instead of 84, but it's likely that his velocity would drop off a bit in a starting role. Perhaps throwing 94-95 MPH instead of 100 MPH is no great sacrifice. Another consideration is what he's meant to the Tigers' bullpen. His departure for the rotation means someone else will need to fill his shoes in 2007. It's hard to imagine anyone matching his 2006 performance, and maybe his ticket is following 38-year-old right-hander Todd Jones as Detroit's closer. The Tigers face a tough decision, but it's a wonderful one to face for this up-and-coming club.

Well, it's on to Oakland for the Motor City Kitties. Zumaya and Co. unbelievably hung 20 scoreless innings on the vaunted Yanks -- and there was no way, with that creaky pitching staff, that the Bombers could overcome that.
Kudos to Dave Dombrowski and team. I still resent what they did to Alan Trammell, but I credit Dombrowski for getting the right ingredients and getting a guy in Jim Leyland who baked everything at the right temperature. I don't want to celebrate too early yet, but this team's got a shot.
