Is Soriano a Wise Acquisition in Light of the Cubs' Many Needs?

Yes, the Cubs needed another power hitter to go with Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee in the lineup, but their needs go well beyond getting Alfonso Soriano. Does it make sense to pay for the most expensive free agent on the market when the team also needs at least two starting pitchers, some relief help, a center fielder and a leadoff hitter? Yes, Soriano is supposed to be that leadoff hitter -- and may be miscast again as the club's center fielder -- but his career .325 on-base percentage isn't a good fit for the top of the order and fails to counter a recent history of free-swingers and low OBP that has hindered the team's run production. For their money, the Cubs get a regular with power and speed, but he doesn't get on base all that frequently and his defensive game is a weakness. Not exactly the complete player that you like to spend $136 million on. New Phillies first-base coach Davey Lopes said it best when asked about Soriano, telling The Boston Globe, "I don't think he's the main guy that you want. But he can be a missing piece." An expensive missing piece. With Soriano in the lineup, the Cubs will score more runs after a dreadful offensive performance last season. The concern, though, is that the pitching was just as ineffective as the hitting in 2006, and are the dollars still there to acquire the arms that can make a difference after a 66-96 season?
