Reyes, Ramirez are Budding Stars of NL East

For the first time in nearly 20 years, a player put himself in scoring position at least 100 times last season, based on his total of doubles, triples and steals of second base. In fact, two players did it. Mets star Jose Reyes collected 30 doubles, 17 triples and 56 steals of second base to put himself in scoring position 103 times. Florida rookie Hanley Ramirez did it 101 times, with 46 doubles, 11 triples and 44 steals of second.

The last player before them to reach the 100 mark was Vince Coleman with the 1987 Cardinals, though he relied on 85 steals. Coleman had just 27 extra-base hits that season, while Ramirez (74) and Reyes (66) had more than twice that total in 2006.

Since 1974, players have put themselves in scoring position at least 100 times in a season on 23 occasions. Just six of those players had at least 50 extra-base hits as part of the equation. Only Juan Samuel in 1984 (70) and Rickey Henderson in 1986 (64) approached the extra-base hit totals accumulated by Reyes and Ramirez last summer.

Pete Rose SHOULD BE IN THE HALL oF FAME UNLESS HE CAN BE PROVEN TO HAVE PLACED ANY BET AGAINST THE TEAM HE WAS REPRESENTING AT ANY TIME,ANY OTHER BET ON HIS OWN TEAM WINNING AND HIS BEING DENIED ENTRANCE INTO THE HALL IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS!!! IF HE WERE DARRYL STRAWBERRY OR BET AGAINST HIS OWN TEAM THAT WOULD BE WORTHY OF DISMISSAL FROM THE HALL.
