Against The Wall

Yes, the Red Wings have their hands full with Edmonton. It’s worth pointing out that since the NHL went to best-of-seven series in the first round (1986-87 season), the eventual champ has often struggled in the first round. And, the eventual champ has faced elimination at some point during the playoffs in the majority of those seasons.

Eventual Cup Winners, 1987-2004

-- 9 of 18 trailed at some point during 1st-round series
(including 1997, 1998 and 2002 Red Wings)

-- 4 of 18 played 7 games in 1st round

-- 12 of 18 faced elimination at some point

For what it’s worth, each of the last six Cup winners faced elimination at some point during the postseason. The last team to win the Cup without playing a seven-game series in any round was Detroit, in 1998.
