Riding The Upset Express

If the Ducks are victorious tonight, it will mean that the No. 5 – No. 8 seeds in the Western conference will all be winners. Since the current playoff-seeding format began in the 1994 postseason, the lower seeds have never swept the higher seeds in either conference.

Most 1st Round Upsets in a Conference in a Single Postseason
(Since 1994 Postseason)

3 - 1998 Eastern Conference
No. 8 Ottawa over No.1 New Jersey, 4-2
No. 7 Montreal over No. 2 Pittsburgh, 4-2
No. 6 Buffalo over No. 3 Philadelphia, 4-1

3 - 1999 Eastern Conference
No. 8 Pittsburgh over No. 1 New Jersey, 4-3
No. 7 Buffalo over No. 2 Ottawa, 4-0
No. 6 Boston over No. 3 Carolina, 4-2

3 - 2001 Eastern Conference
No. 7 Toronto over No. 2 Ottawa, 4-0
No. 6 Pittsburgh over No. 3 Washington, 4-2
No. 5 Buffalo over No. 4 Philadelphia, 4-2

-- Since 1994, there have never been more than four first round upsets in the NHL in a single postseason, and 2006 will be no different as all of the higher seeds won their first round series in the Eastern Conference this year.
