Ducks Put Up Wall for Rookie Wall
The Anaheim Ducks were without their goaltending tandem Sunday, as both Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Ilya Bryzgalov were sidelined with what the team described as lower-body injuries. That couldn't stop the Ducks from beating Calgary, as they recalled 21-year-old Michael Wall from their AHL affiliate in Portland and made him a 5-3 winner in his NHL debut. Anaheim allowed the rookie to get used to his new surroundings, allowing just 11 shots on goal through the first two periods. Eleven more followed in the final period, but the Ducks scored three times in the final 15 minutes to ice the victory. Among the 12 goalies to play for the Ducks since their inception in 1993-94, Wall is only the third to win in his Anaheim debut. Of course, this isn't your typical Ducks team. This year's club shares the NHL lead in points with Buffalo, and has outscored all of its Western Conference rivals. The Ducks also can be quite stingy. They have held their opponent to fewer than 20 shots four times in 25 games, and that seemed to be Calgary's fate before the Flames broke through with 11 third-period shots on Sunday. Anaheim also has recalled David McKee from Augusta of the ECHL. The 23-year-old rookie, who backed up Wall on Sunday, has yet to make his NHL debut.
