Flyers Still Struggling
The Philadelphia Flyers continue to struggle. They have lost their last three games and haven't scored more than three goals in any of their last 11, averaging 1.8 a game in that span while allowing an average of 5.1. The Flyers haven't won two games in a row all season through 14 games. That's the longest stretch without back-to-back wins since going 21 straight games between Feb. 6 and March 21, 1999, before winning their second of two straight on March 22. Is this year's team really that bad? There's no doubt the defense is a slow unit struggling to keep up with opponents, but the lack of scoring punch is a bit of a surprise. Second-year players who contributed as rookies a year ago -- Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and R.J. Umberger -- have just four goals between them. Veteran Sami Kapanen has just one goal on the season and Kyle Calder has yet to find the net. The Flyers, though, won at least 40 games in each of the last four seasons. And that 1998-99 club, despite going 21 games without back-to-back victories, finished 37-26-19 with the third-highest point total in the Eastern Conference. So, there's hope for this year's club, but if there isn't a turnaround in the next few weeks, this whole mess could spiral out of control and the Flyers could be on their couches at home in the spring, watching the Stanley Cup playoffs on TV.
