Rookie Holmqvist Takes Over in Tampa Bay Net

Swedish goaltender Johan Holmqvist didn't post a win in four NHL appearances for the New York Rangers between October 2000 and December 2002. The 28-year-old netminder returned to Sweden for a couple of seasons, but resurfaced in the NHL this fall with the Tampa Bay Lightning. He lost both of his October starts to fall to 0-5 for his career, but in November he's gone 8-1-0 with a 2.41 goals-against average and .914 save percentage. Holmqvist was expected to back up Marc Denis in goal, but he's played well in beating the Thrashers and Islanders twice each before stopping 22 shots in Tampa Bay's 3-1 win over the Ottawa Senators Sunday night. Meanwhile, Denis has lost all four of his November starts, allowing 19 goals and posting a 4.76 GAA. "I'm just happy to play," Holmqvist said after Sunday's victory. And it's likely he'll continue to play as long as the Lightning keep winning. They are 13-10-1 after starting 5-6-0 in October. The key question is, is he simply hot? Or is Holmqvist a legitimate NHL starter after winning a Swedish Elite League GAA title last season?
