Roloson, Fernandez Together Again on the Ice
When Edmonton hosts Minnesota Thursday, there will be more to the game than a showdown of the two teams tied atop the Northwest Division. It will mark the first 2006-07 meeting of the two goaltenders who made up arguably the best goaltending tandem of the last few years. For three-plus seasons, Dwayne Roloson and Manny Fernandez were a terrific netminding duo for the Wild before Roloson was dealt to Edmonton on March 3, a victim of the new salary cap that made it impossible to carry both No. 1-type goaltenders on one team. Roloson was a critical addition as the surprising Oilers advanced to the Stanley Cup finals last spring. On Thursday, they may face each other for the first time since Edmonton's stunning run. These two friends did face each other four times soon after the March trade, with the Wild claiming three victories, though both were named stars of the game after Minnesota's exciting, shot-filled 2-1 shootout victory on April 6. This fall, Roloson is having the slightly better season, and the inconsistent Fernandez has allowed eight goals in the last 39 shots he has faced. Working in Minnesota's favor, however, is that the Wild haven't lost the last seven times they have played in Edmonton. Not once in the four Roloson-Fernandez meetings last spring did a team score more than three goals in regulation, so if the two are in net on opposite ends of the ice Thursday night, a low-scoring affair is a strong possibility.
