NHL Trade Deadline Approaching: Let the Fun Begin
The Phoneix Coyotes shipped left wing Ladislav Nagy to the Dallas Stars last week, and the Calgary Flames picked up defenseman Brad Stuart and center Wayne Primeau from the Boston Bruins. Two wings also changed teams when the Minnesota Wild acquired Adam Hall from the New York Rangers for Pascal Dupuis. The deals kick off the flurry of activity leading up to the NHL trade deadline on Feb. 27. All but roughly a half-dozen teams remain in playoff contention, so the list of potential buyers is large.
This week St. Paul Pioneer Press columnist Charley Walters speculated that the Wild are in position to land St. Louis wing Keith Tkachuk. Reportedly Tkachuk is not interested in waiving the no-trade clause in his contract, so perhaps the veteran winger isn’t going anywhere but on the Blues’ next road trip.
Other possible rent-a-player options include wings Todd Bertuzzi of Florida, Fredrik Modin of the Blue Jackets and Boston’s Marco Sturm. At least two centers are among the host of players who may be available: Tkachuk’s teammate Bill Guerin and Chicago’s Bryan Smolinski. Vancouver would like to add a center to replace the injured Ryan Kesler, so one of them may be a fit for the Canucks. If the Blackhawks can find a taker for a high-dollar contract, they would part with defenseman Adrian Aucoin or goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin, as well, but moving them won’t be easy.
Philadelphia is the team furthest from a playoff spot, and it’s not out of the question that the Flyers will trade Peter Forsberg as part of a retooling effort. It’s conceivable defenseman Derian Hatcher could be on the move, too, as there is speculation that Edmonton, Dallas and San Jose may be interested.
If you could play GM of your favorite team over the next two weeks, what needs would you look to fill? Who might be on your list to fill those holes? Forsberg may be available, but it's safe to say that Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin won't be going anywhere -- no matter how nice they might look in your team's colors.
