PTG scoring update

Observant PTG managers noticed a scoring discrepancy for the goal frenzy that resulted Portsmouth beating Reading 7-4 last week. Our first scoring run credited Steve Harper with a goal when in fact it was Shane Long's deflection from Harper's volley that accounted for the strike. Also, we neglected to score assists for both Zat Knight and Brett Emerton with assists for their goal-producing passes. Subsequent scoring updates corrected both of these shortcomings.

Bill Ainsworth:

Hi there

Did Grame Murty not deserve an assist for Reading's goal yesterday?

Many thanks.

PTG: Bill, A Derby defender headed the ball before Reading's Kevin Doyle managed to get his head to it so no assist is applicable.

thomas mccluskey:

i know this is possibly not the right way to mention this but i'll ask anyway.

the AVA and AVF scoring system seems extremely flawed. imagine the following -

portsmouth score 7 goals again next week.
i have utaka in my team, but he gets injured in the 10th minute.
Utaka's AGF for that match will be 63 (7x9).

Although a player who played most minutes of most games would even out over the season, lesser played players would not.
A young player for a big team may come on for couple of minutes of a hammering of derby and end up with an AGF of 200 or so.

surely this is not correct

PTG: Thomas, the Average Goals For and Average Goals Against scoring categories are ongoing season-long ratios.

As such, in your Utaka example above, the stat will only take into account what happened while he was on the pitch so even if Portsmouth score seven goals again, unless they score all seven in the first nine minutes, he will not get credit for all of the goals.

So, if Portsmouth score one goal while Utaka is on the pitch, his AGF for the game will be 10 (1 goal in 9 mins expressed as a figure per 90 minutes) for that match only.

This will shift Utaka's and your season AGF up a little but not dramatically as this figure takes into consideration total goals per total minutes, expressed as figure per 90 minutes.

As the season goes on and the total minutes and goals figures grow, it becomes more and more difficult to shift the ratio.

Andrew Field:

Hi there

Did Martin Petrov's corner driven in low and hard across the box resulting in a Middlesborough own goal not deserve an assist ?

Thanks

PTG: Andrew, according to PTG rules:

"An 'assist' is defined as a "Successful pass" which subsequently results in a goal being scored by the "receiver" without him losing possession of the ball although in the passage to goal it may be deviated by the goalkeeper or a defender."

And also:

"A 'Successful pass' is defined as the movement of the ball from one player (the passer) to another player (the receiver) where the receiver is a member of the same team as the passer who controls or touches the ball legally without any prior interference or deflection by any player from the opposing team."

As such an own goal cannot result from a successful pass. Consequently no assist is awarded.

Dan:

I was coming on to ask about the Murty assist but notice this has been covered already. How come Tony Hibbert did not recieve a clean sheet in the Merseyside derby? Liverpool didn't score while he was on the pitch! even though he did contribute! maybe an assist too might be pushing it.
