How to snare three points

Fantasy football is traditionally all about the individual. A forward scores a hat-trick but his team lose 4-3? The player's obsessive fantasy manager couldn't care less about the result; the goals are in the bag. But in PlayTheGame it's different because team points count. That's great if you have lots of starting players from the big four clubs but here's a tip if you're lagging in this tricky category: keep an eye out for players due to cover for injured team-mates at leading clubs.
Arsenal had five midfield players ruled out through injury or suspension last weekend and PlayTheGame tipped Lassana Diarra and Denilson, both likely to be unowned, for starts against managerless Wigan Athletic at the Emirates Stadium. The unsurprising three points were surprisingly secured by two late goals but, even still, picking up these players for a one-off game was a simple way to gain six points.
A glance at Premier League previews or PlayTheGame news updates will keep you on top of opportunities such as this. On the other hand, Manchester United fans may point out that things aren't always that simple after Saturday's game against Bolton Wanderers...

Phil:

How do you get hold of unowned players?

cheers
Phil

PTG: Phil, a list of unowned or out-of-contract players in your league can be viewed in a number of ways. One is to access the Statistics page (in the Research section of the site) where all the players in the game areb listed. The ones with (Add) in the PTG team column are unowned and can be picked up at anu time (though you will be asked to drop a player to make room for the new addition). Unowned or out-of-contract players can also be viewed by going to the Add/Release page in the My Team section where they are displayed by position.

James Duffy:

Ashley Young appears to have been credited with 0 successful passes from Wednesday's game against Blackburn. Er, is that right?! Given that he got an assist, I suspect not!

PTG: James, the scoring abnormality you describe is being addressed and the scoring for leagues will be updated to reflect the change before the weekend's matches.

Ed:

The scoring system seems to be constructed to confuse. Schmeichel and Corluka got me 0 points for a clean sheet a few weeks ago, but one of these Arsenal players would get me 3 points each? And now I need players from the top 4 sides to have a chance?
Torres scores when he is marked as injured, and Schmeichel gets stuck on loan to the championship without even a note next to his name. Reyes sold to Spain before he even ended up on my team.
I am not expecting to win a big prize, and very much enjoy playing, but I really have no idea how this whole thing works...

PTG: we use 10 scoring categories in the game (five for goalkeepers and defenders & five for midfielders and forwards). these are listed in the tables page. your team's performance in each of the ten categories is judged in relation to the performance of other teams in your league and given a value to represent this standing. These values are added across all ten scoring categories to give each team an overall score.

Devlin:

Taking into account the recalculating of Ashley Young's pass stats and general inexplicable point distribution previously - is it safe to say you are making up the point scoring system as you go?
