The bright side of Neil Matthews' life was understandably obscured last summer when a knee injury severly curtailed the 23-year-old's mobility though as the old line suggests, there is indeed a silver lining to every cloud. The Southampton Solent University student spent much of his down time reading and so it was that he stumbled across a supplement in The Times proclaiming the arrival of a new football game that promised to revolutionise the fantasy games industry during the coming season.
Matthews was intrigued by PlayTheGame and subsequently coralled a few friends to join a league he had created. The game did not disappoint and becoming PlayTheGame's first monthly winner (September) goes a long way to making up for the summer's suffering. His Drunkard Canaries Sink team led his league for most of the season and he credits the exploits of Cesc Fabregas and Jamie Carragher for his success. He was also pleased to end up with Blackburn's Stephen Warnock in his squad after moving the left back up his rankings ahead of his league's player allocation in August. "I had a good feeling about Blackburn this season," he explains.
Matthews, an Arsenal supporter, has chosen to attend the Gunners' visit to the City of Manchester Stadium on February 2. Along with three companions of his choice, Matthews will be provided with hotel accomodation in Manchester as well as £200 spending money. All in all, the ingredients for a memorable weekend.
