Know your limits

The first half of the league season becomes the second for most teams today, which makes it the perfect time to sit back and maximise your chances of PlayTheGame success. A lead can always be shored up and a deficit can be more easily clawed back in this league format so use the rules to your advantage. One unforgivable sin that fantasy managers have absolute control over preventing is finishing with unused games, so check your positional limits.

This is simply done, just click on the "My team" tab at the top of the PlayTheGame page and scan the first column under the team diagram, titled "Left". This details how many games you have left out of 38 for each position, which is combined for the centre back, central midfield and forward categories to a total of 76. With the games coming thick and fast over the holiday period, now is a good time to rest one or two players if you are running low in a position. Similarly, players can be slipped in for a Sunday or midweek game as well as a Saturday to get closer to the limit. You're in control so use what you are entitled to.

Yeah Baby!

tom e:

how can you rest players (if a position is running low on games remaining) ? if i try to simply put an active player to the bench without replacing him the team can't be submitted. Cheers

PTG: Tom, the game is set to reject teams that are invalid to prevent players from inadvertantly setting incorrectly configured teams. As such, attempts to set a team with a blank position will result in an error. To get around this, in the first instance stop rotating players into a position that is low on games remaining. If it is too late for that and more drastic action is needed, you can always pick up a player that is unlikely to play for his club (due to injury, transfer away from Premier League or loss of form) but is still eligible at the position you are trying to save games remaining on.

Pete:

I have just picked up 2 out-of-contract players (Gelson Fernandez and Joe Hart) but neither of them are available in my squad today - however they are visible in my squad for tomorrow.

As the City game is not due to start for another 10 mins I can only assume this is a bug.

Please can you let me know what has happened?

PTG: Pete, the game locks players in position five minutes before their respective teams' kick-offs. The situation you describe may have come about as a result of several factors including the players you intended to drop having been frozen.

g:

You're brilliant system left without a RB after the allocation.

Now I can't field a full team, and as a result can't even move any of the FOUR goalkeepers you gave me off the damn pitch.

PTG: please check your team carefully. The allocations are set to ensure that a full team is available to all our players. Once this is done, the game will allocate your top-ranked available player regardless of position - thus possibly explaining the number of goalkeepers in your squad. Of course, injuries can leave your team short so you can always add out-of-contract players (though you will need to drop an equal number of players as your squad has to contain 20 players).

Bill:

Hi there

2 questions if you dont mind.

1. Am I right in thinking that a positional use is only deducted if the player allocated actually plays?

2. What happens if a team runs out of allocations in a paricular position e.g. If all 38 Gk spots have been used up can the rest of the team continue with the last Gk used in that position but just not scoring any points?

Thanks

PTG: Bill, positional use is only deducted if a player actually plays for his Premier League club AND is in one of the 14 active positions within your squad (ie not on the bench).
When you run out of uses for a particular position, players listed in the slot will no longer figure in the scoring for your team.

paul martin:

Is this competition terminally ill?
I am in 4 leagues, of which the number of actively managed teams average 30% of starting teams.
After the initial announcement I have seen no mention of prize winners??
There appears to be nowhere for open discussion.... hence sneaking this in here.
Shame, as the concept is good.

PTG: All prize winners from Sept-Nov are listed on the prizes page. Decembers winner has been drawn and will be announced shortly.
