The Statistics page

Whilst we are all used to setting our team and checking the latest league table, PlayTheGame has more functionality available if you scratch beneath the surface. In the first of a new series, we take a look at some of the things you could be missing.

The statistics page (which can be found as an option under the 'Research' tab) has been recently updated with increased search functionality. It is an invaluable resource for any PTG manager to assess how players are performing, and scouting out new players to add to their squad.

Dropdowns have been added to enable managers to sort by more than one category at a time. This includes the ability to search by ‘Out-of-Contract’ players in the ‘Status’ dropdown - particularly useful if you are looking for available players.

PTG managers can now assess players form using the ‘Timeframe’ dropdown. As before you can look at a players performance over the season, but you can now judge players over the last 5/10 games that the players team has played.

The dropdowns can also be used to search by player position, premier league club, PTG scoring categories or number of ‘minutes played'. If you want to look at a specific player, simply enter the players first or last name into the search field and click ‘find’.

Lastly if you want to change the order in which the data is displayed (ascending or descending), just click the category header at the top of the table.

With the January transfer window open, and new players coming into PTG, (once they have played for their respective Premier League team) there’s never been a better time to utilise the statistics page and maximise your squad’s potential through the second half of the season.

Pierre Demajo:

Why tell everyone this? I've been making great use of this invaluable resource all season - now I just hope my League opponents don't read this post!

Adam:

Is Chelsea's new signing Ivanovic going to be added to the game? He isn't available in my league, and no-one else has signed him up. I fancied him for a clean sheet at Birmingham this weekend!

PTG: Branislav Ivanovic will be added to the game once he has made an appearance for Chelsea in the Premier League. This is the same process that has been used to add players thoughout the season.

Robert:

what does is mean by the fact that you're only allowed to play a position 38 times in the season. Because if there's games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday like this week then that's three matches gone and i can't fill every slot with players who are playing. How will it work. Will it all work out so that however many players I put out it and the end of the season will add up to 38. Or will i have to ration the positions i choose for the players? But if it is the latter I can't do that because it says my team has too few active players.

PTG: You do not have to fill each position with an active player from that days matches but you are only allowed to play each of your 14 active positions 38 times across the season. Please see section 14 on the rules page regarding maximum plays. The number of plays each position in your team has left can be seen in the column titled 'Left' on the 'Manage Team' page.

Dad and Harris:

The TOF (times official ranking) seems to represent the original ranking at the start of the season.

Is there scope to have this ranking represent an ongoing ranking based on players performances throughout the season?

PTG: You are absolutely correct. The Times Online ranking that is shown in the Statistics table is the original ranking from the start of the season. This ranking is based on players performance in the 2006-07 season and was in place to assist with player ranking.

There are no plans at the moment to have this updating on the basis of current performance, however we will keep your suggestion in mind when thinking about the future development of PTG.

Phil Hertel:

Just thought I'd let you know that I've thoroughly enjoyed participating in PTG. Of course this may have something to do with my level of success (so far), but nonetheless it's a wonderfully devised bit of fun for the statistics junkies such as myself. My only disappointment is the relatively low level of active participation by the other managers in my league; my sense of achievement is very much in context. So well done Times - and PLEASE don't stop this game!! Kind regards, Phil
